Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven, given to mankind by which we must be saved.” …..Acts 4:11-12
Not everyone believes in God, actually not everyone believes there is God but neither of these two positions actually invalidates God’s existence, power and sovereignty, they are simply human perspectives. Talk to anyone in either of these camps and they will give you their reasons for where they stand, and you really have to understand that it is not our responsibility as Christians to convince people about God, we have simply been given the task of making the word of God more accessible and not more acceptable as the only one who can convict a heart and turn it around is the Holy Spirit.
However, every human being builds his or her life on one foundation or the other and even the absence of a set of principles by which you live by, commonly tagged the free spirit, in of itself is a foundational principle someone might choose to live by and it is absolutely okay if that is what one chooses to do. It’s okay in the sense that God has never been known to force himself or the belief in him on anyone, he has never violated the free will that he has given to man at any point in time. We all have the God given power to choose what we build life on, how we live and what we choose to believe but having said that, you have to bear in mind that every action puts us on path to a particular destination and one can’t stay on a particular path and expect to end up some place other than the designated end that path is set to lead us. Remember the story Jesus told his disciples of the man that built a house on the rock and the other that built on the sand? Yes, it’s kind of like that, you’re free to build on the sand but don’t expect your house to be standing when the storm comes!
Amazingly this is still a faith stance and not everyone believes that. Some feel they can build life however they want and still come up tops and some don’t even believe our earthly existence and activity has any impact on life after death and that’s even if there is one. Whatever you choose to do, understand this, from what we have seen and experienced, everyone at some point comes to the end of life and one by one we leave this world and based on what God has said in his word, we enter a period of self accountability and depending on how we have lived, we end up where we end up. So be sure you are convicted in your beliefs, believe what you choose based on conviction and not popular demand or culture shift or change as no advocate, interest or rights group will stand with you when it is time to give account of how you lived, the CNN/ORC poll will not help you when that time comes. I say this so that you are fully prepared for what your life on earth will earn you when eternity comes calling and whatever that reward is, you are okay with it and interestingly enough you may not even believe any of this will happen.
To believe or not to believe is one thing, but also to believe and how to believe is another thing entirely and looking at our world today, one would see that the latter is as if not more important that the former.
I’ve been around a lot of construction in my life time because my Dad is civil engineer and growing up, we had opportunities to follow him to some of his construction sites to see a building come up from its foundation, see how a bridge is erected over waters, how roads are constructed and all that stuff. So the concept of the cornerstone is not new to me at least from a practical experience and I want to use that experience to explain what this scripture is saying to us and what we must understand.
According to Wikipedia, a cornerstone (or foundational stone) concept is derived from the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure. Simple enough right? So we take that visual and overlay it on this scripture and without saying anything further, you understand what the bible is saying here.
If your plan is to build a life that involves a relationship with God, if your goal is to enter into his eternal rest when all is said and done, if your desire is to have God as the focal point of your life then there is only one cornerstone that will make that happen and it’s Jesus Christ. Replace him with anything or anyone else then you are building for something else not God. I understand the mantra of our society right now is “you have your truth and I have mine” but even that hasn’t changed God’s view point and standard when it comes to him being part of any life.
Jesus himself said “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”…John 14:6. It is as clear as that. It may sound offensive, discriminatory or whatever you want to call it, you may disagree with it but it doesn’t change it. It is what God said and that is what we must believe.
The word of God was given not to exclude anyone, but it is an opportunity to be included in God’s grace, goodness and mercy. The inclusion part all depends on your response to his word. I know we love quoting John 3:16 and rightfully so because it is true but that was not the entirety of Jesus’ statement. So here is the other part that we kind of gloss over because it speaks a truth that we don’t really want to deal with.
“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believed in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”…..John 3:17-18
So in reference to what Peter said, you are the builder, you are the master over your destiny. You decide what you want, how you want to live and who you choose to believe. As you are looking at these stones to decide which will be the cornerstone for your foundation, don’t reject Jesus, don’t set him aside and pick something else. He is the cornerstone if you want to have any kind of meaning relationship with God. Under heaven, there is no other salvation criteria, if you want to experience the eternal salvation that God has promised, if you want to reap the benefit of the blood that was shed on the cross of Calvary, if you want to live in the power of his resurrection then there is no other stone to lay at the corner than Jesus Christ himself. The one who was sent into this world to die for our sins and because of his victory, he has been given a name that is above all other names and there is no other name under heaven given to man by which salvation is possible!
