When Jesus hit the streets to start his ministry, his first message was a call to repentance, a call for a mind shift, preparation for something new. It meant that the direction the world was going was not in line with what God had in mind and so his message was an invitation into God’s order, where a different set of rules and principles apply, things were not done the way they were being done in man’s world. So, it is safe to say the salvation that Jesus offers is not only to free us from the bondage of our present way of life and sinfulness, it is to pull us into a new way of living and doing things, for it would make absolutely no sense if his sacrifice has no effect or bearing on what we end up doing and becoming after we receive it, then his death has accomplished nothing.
So is the Christian life just a journey into behavioral modification or what exactly is it? Is it just some vague mystical experience that never translates into reality? Is this experience limited to the heart and just an emotional response? Surely there has to be an expectation of a different existence, way of life or living. I understand navigating man’s inabilities and constant falls and shortcomings in light of God’s mercy and grace may create a false impression that the life it recommends is not humanly possible or an unrealistic ideal at best but one has to wonder why God invested so much in offering us a life that will prove to be impossible to attain.
What exactly is God calling us into here? First and foremost, he is calling us into newness, most importantly a brand new start. You may look at yourself and say “well I didn’t experience newness, my life was still in the mess it was the day after I gave my life him, my problems still persisted”. Could it be that you’re looking at the wrong thing first? I believe God can literally wipe out your problems in the blink of an eye, he has a track record of doing that, he has the power to do that, when and how he decides that, I cannot discern or figure out But I do know that he cares enough to make all things in your life ultimately work out for your good if you trust him, I think David said no one who hopes in God will ever be put to shame, I can say that has been my testimony as well, I have been through a lot of things and still am going through but nothing has been able to put me to shame, God always come to my aid and rescue.
This is what his death and resurrection did for us who make the decision to accept his salvation;
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins….Colossians 1:13-14
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation….Colossians 1:21-22
Sin had a grip on us, and being under its authority, we only lived by its rules, there was nothing in us that could resist the rule of sin, it was the order of the day. You only have to look at the world around you and see that it’s a different set of rules out there and the world may have us think that we are not under bondage but just free to make our own decisions but there is no greater lie than this, the things we indulged in and gave ourselves to ultimately controlled us and dictated how we lived, we weren’t really free, nobody who is sinning is free, it’s the power and authority of sin at play, lets’s not be deceived. God in his goodness and mercy sent his Son to die to release us from this old way of living and life of bondage, so when I talk newness, it means we have been relocated, new kingdom, new country, new home or whatever makes the point clear to you. In this new kingdom, there is no bondage but freedom, there is no fear of death but longing for life, there is no darkness but light.
Our minds now have new processing tools to work with, prior to now our thought process was guided by self satisfaction and everything sinful but now the word of God becomes the new nurturing tool that we can use to have a renewed mind, and a renewed mind ultimately leads to renewed behavior. So you can see in the space that we are in, there is grace and strength for newness, everything is new, every experience takes on new perspective and possibilities all because we have been redeemed, bought back, pulled out of darkness into light.
I understand there is more to it than this but the purpose of this is to just to encourage you to press pause and enjoy this revelation, I understand life may not be aligned right now and you may even have struggles with sin every now and then, don’t let it deny you of the power in this new found life. Sin is no longer your master, it’s only attempting to reclaim old territory so you only need to put on the armor of God and stand your ground, now you have the power to not let it reign in your mortal body and understand when you are weak, God’s strength comes to make things perfect, your struggle is not enough to separate you from the new life, continue in faith and victory will be sure because victory has already happened, you need only walk in it.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God…2 Corinthians 5:17-21
REJOICE IN THIS NEW FOUND LIFE!!
